David represents businesses and entrepreneurs.
He represents clients in the formation of businesses, the acquisition of businesses and assets, and the sale and liquidation of businesses and assets. He represents clients when they finance their businesses through friends and family funding, bank loans, private equity, promissory notes, and venture funding. He also represents the parties that fund and finance businesses. He drafts contracts of all types. He drafts contracts between business partners, vendors and customers, employers and employees, lenders and borrowers, landlords and tenants, and any other parties doing business with each other. He serves as general counsel for businesses, advising owners and management in a wide spectrum of areas that affect the business. He handles litigation when clients are sued, and when clients need the courts to enforce their rights.
Many of David’s clients describe him as an entrepreneur who happens to be an attorney because he brings a great deal of business experience into a client’s legal issues.
David has owned and operated businesses other than his law practice. He has managed and operated a graphic design business, mobile phone master dealer, video game developer, mobile application publisher, online and mobile application travel reservation business, and a steak and seafood restaurant. David has walked in the shoes of every one of his clients.
His entrepreneurial ventures started when he graduated from Rice University. Rather than submit himself to the challenges of a difficult economy and job market in 1990, he created his own job by establishing one of Dallas’ first all digital graphic design shops using the first versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark Express to displace traditional paste-up graphic design.
After graduating from the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, he continued his entrepreneurial endeavors by hanging his own shingle in November 1996. His first clients were business owners from his church that retained him to handle business litigation matters. He expanded the scope of his representation to general business matters.
In 2000, David became in-house counsel to a Dallas venture incubator. This gave him the opportunity to represent entrepreneurs in forming complex business structures, raising start-up capital, and financing transactions. With this experience, David expanded his practice into many kinds of financing transactions, formation of partnerships, and the daily operation of ventures.
From 2005 through 2011, David either founded or was part of the management team of a mobile phone master dealer, video game developer, mobile application publisher, online and mobile application travel reservation business, and a steak and seafood restaurant.
David’s advice to clients is from an entrepreneur’s perspective. He knows how problems develop, grow and resolve. He understands that legal representation must be handled within the funds available to a business to deal with its legal issues.
David was born in Taiwan and moved to Houston where his father studied at Rice University when he was two years old. David’s family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma when he was five, where he lived through middle school. His family moved to Dallas in 1982. David graduated from Plano Senior High School in 1986 where he did well enough to attend Rice University. He graduated from Rice in 1990 where he studied biochemistry and economics.
David is married to Lucy, and they have twin teenage boys and a French bulldog. He is an elder at his church. He enjoys watching all kinds of sports, and is an avid fan of all the Dallas teams. He still speaks Mandarin.
David is admitted to practice law in Texas.
